Being an Outlook user, you must be aware of the PST file size limit. There’s everything great about MS Outlook client. It provides you unmatched features and high-class performance. The only thing that literally irritates me is the PST file size limit. An Outlook data file (.PST) has a specific size limit. This means an Outlook PST file can’t store the mailbox content more than its specific file size limit. In this blog post, we’ll discuss the PST file size limit and its negative aspects. Also, we’ll learn how to split PST file so that you can enjoy the Outlook features and performance at their best.

Microsoft Outlook

Microsft Outlook is a popular email client provided by Microsoft for Windows users. It’s not just an email client, it’s more than that. It’s the only email client that provides you multiple features in just one application program. Other than being a popular email application, it provides you features like calendar, task manager, contact manager, note taking, journal, and web browsing. To store the Outlook mailbox content, it creates an Outlook data file, commonly known as Outlook PST file. PST stands for personal storage table, a file type used by MS Outlook client. PST file is created on the local system on which the Microsoft Outlook program is installed.

Outlook PST File Types

There are two types of PST files created by MS Outlook client: ANSI PST and Unicode PST. Do you know the difference between these two PST file types? The first difference is the Outlook versions. If you’re using Outlook 2002 or any earlier version, it uses ANSI PST file format. And if you’re using Outlook 2003 and later versions, it uses Unicode PST file format. And the second reason (the major one) is the size limit of these PST file types. An ANSI PST file can only store up to 2 GB of mailbox content. While the Unicode PST file has a maximum size limit of 20 GB (Microsoft Outlook 2003 & 2007) to 50 GB (Microsoft Outlook 2010, 2013 & 2016). And just because of this specific size limitation, a PST file is always prone to corruption. How?

PST File Size Limit Issue

It’s pretty obvious that an Outlook user sends and receives thousands of email messages each and every day. This will grow the PST file size day-by-day. And one day, it’ll reach its maximum file size. The fact says that a large PST file can lead to some serious issues. It can easily affect or degrade the Outlook’s performance. You’ll notice an abnormal behavior of MS Outlook client, such as frequent crashes, hanging issues, etc. And sometimes the situation becomes even worse if the Outlook PST file crosses its maximum size limit. In such a situation, Outlook users face corruption issues. So it’s better to keep your PST files handy and compact in size. The best way to handle a large PST file is to split PST file into two or multiple smaller parts (as per the requirement).

How to split PST file?

Well, there are two ways to split PST file: manually and/or by using a professional PST Split software. DIY is always a better approach here. Therefore, you should try the manual trick first before using any 3rd party software. The manual trick only requires MS Outlook client, that’s it. There are few built-in features in Microsoft Outlook program which you can use here. One such feature is Import through which you can split PST file into two or multiple parts. But before you can use that feature, don’t forget to take backup of your original PST file. Also, create new PST files into which you can move the mailbox content from the main PST file.

Use the “Import” feature of Microsoft Outlook

Launch the MS Outlook client, and then follow these simple steps:

Step 1: First, open the PST file from which you want to import mailbox content into new PST files.

Step 2: On the taskbar, click the File tab. Click Open in the options > Import.

Step 3: On the Import and Export Wizard, select Export to a file in the options. Click Next to continue the process.

Step 4: On the Export to a File window, select Outlook Data File (.pst) in the options. Click Next to continue the process.

Step 5: On the Export Outlook Data File window, select the folder to export from. You may check Include subfolders box and define filter settings. Click Next to continue the process.

Step 6: Now click the Browse button to select the file into which you want to export the mailbox content.

Note: Here you need to select the PST file you’ve created earlier.

Step 7: Finally, click Finish to start the export process.

Through this manual trick, you can successfully export one mailbox folder into a new PST file. To export multiple mailbox folders one by one, you need to perform the same manual trick multiple times. This may take a lot of time, and it’s the only drawback of this manual trick. So if you’re looking for an easy, quick and effective solution to split PST file, you should definitely look forward to professional PST Split software.
