MS SQL Server is a relational database management system (RDBMS) developed by Microsoft. This product is built to perform some basic function of storing retrieving data as required by other applications. This server is designed for use in corporate applications, both on premises and in the cloud.

While establishing a connection to SQL Server we come across Error 40 which says a network-related or instance-specific error occurred and the server was not found or was not accessible.

These 40 error messages can appear any time during the program installation. Some of the common cause occurring (Error 40) are:

  1. Faulty hardware.
  2. Driver conflict after installing new hardware.
  3. Incorrectly configured, old, or corrupted device drivers. (very common)
  4. Corruption happens in Windows registry from a recent (install or uninstall)/software change.
  5. Virus or malware infection that has corrupted Windows system files or related drivers.

If you see the above error message then follow the below givenmanual solutions to resolve these issues:

1. SQL Server instance is not running.

Go to Services option, click on SQL Server installed in your system, I have SQL Server instance installed with name: MSSQLSERVER. If it is in not Started Status, then start it by right clicking on it and click on START option.

2. Make sure that TCP/IP is enabled.

In order to make it enable follow the steps given in the image: Click on Configuration Manager of SQL Server.

Now you can check the TCP/IP port status as Enabled or Disabled. You need to make it Enable and click on status to change port Properties.

Now fill Default Port no 1433 click on OK button.

3. Enable the Remote Connections under Connections setting in SQL Server Properties:

Follow the below given steps to enable it.

First open SQL Management Studio then right click on the server name and click on the server Properties.

In the Server Properties within the Connections Options, you require to click on the allow option of the remote connections to this server and then click on Ok button.

4. Allow SQL Server in Firewall Settings: You need to add a Windows Firewall exception on the server for SQL TCP ports 1433 and 1434, so that SQL Server will run.

Go to Control Panel then System and Security or directly search it on you system search as Windows Firewall in this click on Firewall, Here you can see Action tab as Allow for Firewall. Through SQL Server Properties Youcan also change it by making it allow or block. As given in the below image.
